Install Outbreak Arcade

Online multiplayer on your own console, set up right on the machine with a keyboard.

Outbreak Arcade adds online multiplayer to your console. Installing it takes about two minutes and you do it right on the machine, using a keyboard. You do not need a computer, and you do not need to know anything about Linux.

What you need

  • A USB keyboard plugged into the console.
  • The console connected to your network, wired if you can. Netplay is much happier on a cable.

Open the file manager

Start at the main game menu, the one with the system wheel. Press F1 on the keyboard. A file manager window opens on top of the menu.

Open a terminal

In the file manager menu bar along the top, click Applications, then choose Xterm. A small black window opens with a blinking cursor. That is the terminal.

Run the installer

Type this line exactly as it appears, then press Enter:

The installer runs by itself from there. It downloads Outbreak, pins the emulator versions that netplay needs so both players are running the same thing, sets it to start automatically every time you boot, and then starts it right away.

When it looks like it has finished, the terminal may just sit there instead of closing on its own. That is normal. Type exit and press Enter, and the window closes.

Close the terminal and reboot

Type exit and press Enter to close the terminal, then close the file manager window. Reboot the console once so everything comes up cleanly. You are done.

Turn on Remote Support

Do this once and you will not have to think about it again. It lets me connect to your arcade to fix something for you if you ever run into trouble, instead of talking you through it over the phone.

  1. On the arcade, open Outbreak Host.
  2. Press Select on your controller to open Settings.
  3. Switch Remote Support on.

While you are in there, note your arcade's IP address from Network Settings. It looks like 192.168.0.100. You will need it if you ever ask for a fix.

Nothing happens unless you ask for help, and you can switch it back off in the same place at any time.

That's it. You're online.

Outbreak starts on its own every time you boot, so there is nothing to run again. Open Outbreak Host on the arcade, host a game or join one that is already up, and you are playing against real people over the internet.

If a game gives you trouble

Remote support comes with any console bought from us, and it covers this install too. Doing it yourself instead of sending the machine in does not cost you the support. Remote Support is how I reach the console, and a report is how I know what to look at.

Fill in the report form with the game, the system, what actually happens, and your arcade's IP address. Leave the machine powered on and connected to the internet, and in most cases the fix lands without you doing anything else.

It does not stop at your console either. When something gets sorted on one machine, it goes into the next update for every Outbreak console.
